UGL heavy maintenance facility based in Bassendean, Perth are seeking applications from M&G Wheelsets Mechanical Fitter/Machinist. These positions will be a permanent full time opportunities working on a rotational shift basis, 3 week roster cycle working 10 & 12 hour day and afternoon shifts (some mid week days off & 1 Saturday in every 3 weeks, no Sundays).

About the role

  • Working as a fitter/machinist on a locomotive wheelset overhaul line consisting of:
    • Wheelset and traction motor combo disassembly
    • Wheel on and off pressing
    • Wheel machining
    • Axle machining
    • Bearing installation
    • Component measurement
    • U-tube strip and re-assembly
    • Wheelset and traction motor combo re-assembly
  • To perform trade related tasks such as component overhaul, installation and fit out of mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Inspect and interpret drawings and specifications and determine method of manufacture and standards as required
  • A strong commitment to maintaining a safety environment


About You

  • Relevant Trade Qualification
  • Experience machining with manual vertical borer and manual lathe
  • High attention to detail and basic knowledge of measuring instruments
  • Strong communication skills. Both oral and written
  • Previous work experience in the rail industry is desirable but not essential, happy to train the right candidate for this role
